Trash Panda
« on: January 24, 2017, 12:57:41 PM »
I decided since, I've been with the club a couple years now and since becoming VP I will likely be here another 2 years, I should probably start a build page.

For me it started as a kid with a couple Jeep toys, but at one point we had an old scout, a bronco and several pickups so my dad liked driving in ditches or up hills when camping, fishing and hunting. My real bug started when one of his buddies  had an old CJ and took us wheeling. Later a few friends had Jeeps, but life moved forward. I got married, had a kid, divorce etc... it really started for me a few years back on a scenic trip to Arches national park in this place called Moab Utah. On that trip while waiting in the heat and long tourist lines to drive through the park, a group of Jeeps came at us from the other direction and turned off the pavment on to a dirt road, slowly  disappearing in to the rocky hill side. It was all I could do to keep from not follow them in my Silverado crew cab and I was hooked. For the next 2 years I shopped, watched jeep videos and looked online until my wife said "shut up about Jeeps and go get one already!" So my first jeep was a black on black, used 2011 JKU sport.

The building and parts shopping began right away. Like most rookie owners, I started with the interior and cosmetic mods. We took it to South Dakota on vacation and I kept wanting to test it's limits, but never really did much besides camping with this Jeep.

I actually thought that too, but my first Jeep only had 2 stickers that I added. I just was killing time today, at the Dr. Office but now that this is started, it will be easier to update for future mods.

So back to Blackie, I added the bull bar to the stock bumper. Had AEV wheels, grab handles, new seat covers, replaced  Jeep logo with black letters, stock lift. Nothing too fancy,  but I learned a lot with it and made most of my mistakes with this Jeep. I discovered the tail lights have two different sized screws and shouldn't be swapped or you may screw in to the body by mistake. I discovered the Jeep grill logo doesn't just pop right off and a screwdriver isn't a good pry bar on plastic. So i found black letters for an altitude I'd never heard of on eBay.
I got a replacment black grill on Craigslist for $50 and did it right the 2nd time. Then got a soft top for $400 on Craigslist, weather tech mats blah blah. All the while I kept reading about parts I'd never be able to afford and watching videos of trips I'd never take, but heard about the all breeds Iowa Jeep show and went to that in 2013-2014. I thought it would be a good place to see what others have done. There I seen the future Captain Atch'merica Jeep, before I ever met him or before he owned it and I knew anything I did couldn't compete :-)

I should add a quick note I ran in to Ryan W. A couple times when I had this Jeep and he kept trying to recruit me. So eventually between my mistakes and this Jeep getting egged by neighborhood punks, I started looking for something more. I found my current Jeep on the way home from work one night. As I drove through the car lots on a regular basis. This is exactly how it looked when I got it. So I traded the 2011 sport for the 2011 Rubicon and started selling its parts right away.

It had a 2" spacer lift, 315s (aka metric 35s) Nitto trail grapplers, AEV wheels, front and rear bumper with tire carrier. I stopped a few more times then went to talk numbers. When we found a middle ground I went home and took as much as I could off my other jeep to save for the new jeep. Swapped the screwed up grills, removed mats and pretty much everything I thought I could and started selling parts and leftovers to buy parts I wanted.

Lol thanks for the undates :-)
The rest of this may be a little out of sequence because I've waited so long to start this but after browsing for photos I think the overall progress will be apparent.

One of my first security purchases. I wanted a place to lock stuff when I had no top, but this smittybilt drawer was junk. I sold it a few months later for half the price.

I ended up replacing it with a tuffy security deck, which I still have and love.

New shocks that turned out to be a pain. No good place to mount them or my tires were always rubbing and turning them.
