Title: 2013 JKU - Black on Blue Build
Post by: FlyingForMe on March 13, 2015, 01:14:02 PM
After my Jeep's first time wheelin (in my JKU) on 3/15/15 I was actually really impressed with how well a stock jeep can perform. But I did realize I needed a lift to off-road with 33's.

everything else is cosmetic for now

Cheap-o spot lights for grill guard mount lights.

Convenience:
Added Power Locks
Added Power Windows
Added Remote Start with Alarm
Garage Door Buttons integrated

Factory Hard Top

Painted the muffler and exhaust tip black.
Wiped the muffler down with de-greaser and then paint thinner, then painted it with engine paint.

Installed buttons for my garage door opener in the windshield horizontal trim piece.
I used a multi-meter to figure out which points on the circuit board were the contacts for the buttons on my opener and wired those to the 2 switches for my 2 garage doors.
I hardwired the opener's batter circuit to the cigarette lighter circuit using a 5V - voltage reducer from Radio Shack since the opener used 2 3 Volt batters = 6 volts, (better under powered than over powered, and radio shack didn't have anything in between 5 and 12v).
Also since this is on my radio circuit, if i have the top off and its in the driveway no one can get in to my garage without the key being turned on.
*hard to tell from the angle of the picture but the buttons line up with the jeep grille logo on the windshield.

Changed it to say "hasn't seen off-road yet" . I'm not a big fan of Mudding, did that in my last jeep, it just gets everywhere and isn't anymore fun than Snow-Wheelin and at least it melts off.

Did some wheelin with Atch and Joe this weekend. Once i disconnected my sway bar i started rubbing in the fenders pretty bad even over just some smaller bumps.
So next up on the list is a 2.5" Lift, might go 3.
I was looking at the TeraFlex, but i may consider spending a little more to make sure i'm getting a good ride on the street and won't have sagging issues.
I'm open for feedback, and opinions.

After a successful talk and Tune with Ryan and John.  :HiFive

We got the 2.5" spacer lift on in about 3 hours, there were a few fitment issues because i bought the cheap kit not the AEV or Terraflex, but now that it's on i don't think there will be any issues.

Working on fiberglass fender liners for trimmed fenders.
Wrapped the old fender liners with an old shirt and applied some resin.  Once I get the form I'll reinforce it with fiberglass matt.

Hit up Cody, I bet he'd have something you could cut up sooner than later.
Title: Re: 2013 JKU - Black on Blue Build
Post by: gtaIon on May 05, 2015, 08:28:35 PM
LOL, it's one thing after another.  As we were finishing up putting a sub panel in the garage to power the plasma cutter, my youngest tipped the air compressor over busting the outlet Nipple right at the top of the tank.  So that thing just isn't getting the practice it should be.

Would there be room to cut the bumper without it looking funky?

What does the wonder mobile have for a bumper?

Fair warning, last time I cut any metal was in high school (about 17 years ago).  I'm willing to give it a go, we can take turns trying to get it figured out if you want.

I want to stubby it, cutting near the weld on the bumper. Perhaps I'll let you practice up before I let you carve up the bumper.

Cutting near the seam would look good.  I'm taking  off Friday to recover from a possible hang over, so I might get some cutting practice done?  I'll let you know if I'm any good or not.

Maybe consider this angle for a cut on the front- it would match the bottom angle of your bumper (similar angle to what mine is).  Maybe round the end so it transitions to the side better.  This is what I was going to do to mine until Sean sold me his Bushwhackers...

Not a bad idea, i'm scared to take too much off, i think i'm going to live with them the way they are for a bit.
If i decide to not go back to stock for sure, then i will cut like you suggested.
If i hate it, i can always re-cut on the extra set that were passed along to me.

I think i will like the trimmed fenders a lot more when i get fender liners back in.

I popped the first one off of the mold today, it held its form pretty well and shouldn't need much more to get it ready to mount. I doubt i will have any time to work on it till after this weekend though.
I need to work on my CB install before next weekend so I have quite a bit of time in the garage coming up.

Test fit drivers side, time to apply resin and create basic mold for passenger and stretch and resin the custom parts of the drivers side.

Atch if you want it cut at the weld that leaves a lot of end to practice on does it? Just keep cutting it shorter until you guys are comfortable with the technic

Thanks guys!!
I've got some cosmetic things to do to the drivers side, but i think it's 98% done.
I still need to find the time to slide the passenger side in and do the adjustments on that.

Then it will be time to sand and make it look pretty.

First ride was this morning on the way to work. I really want to say it was a lot smoother. Didn't notice many little road bumps. Also pulling into my work parking lot it didn't seem to rock as violently turning on the inclined ramp to the parking lot.
I keep wanting to think it's just in my head, but I feel like it was a huge improvement.
I need to get some more miles on it to be sure.
Title: Re: 2013 JKU - Black on Blue Build
Post by: FlyingForMe on June 10, 2015, 07:58:42 AM
After a day of driving around, i can definitely say i notice a difference. It's a lot smoother ride, softer over bumps and holes, and not quite so bouncy.
I'm happy with that, but more importantly I have a stronger suspension since I was able to remove my shock extension brackets. Next will be stiffer front springs, i would like to get something @3" then eventually 2.5" rear springs.

Title: Re: 2013 JKU - Black on Blue Build
Post by: FlyingForMe on June 10, 2015, 02:56:06 PM
Rock krawler guarantees a minimum lift of their advertised height. So 2.5's will net 2.5-3  3.5's 3.5-4 so they estimate that with my setup I'll be at 2.75. Taking in to consideration I am already sagging from the bumper on factory springs, this will get me very close to where I want to be. When I add the winch, I'll add .75" spacers.
Title: Re: 2013 JKU - Black on Blue Build
Post by: FlyingForMe on June 18, 2015, 10:39:57 PM
Installed rock krawler  front 2.5" springs.
It added a little over an inch of lift compared to stock springs and 2.5" pucks. I'm happy with the ride so far. I've only put a few miles on them to test out steering wheel center.

I was just minding my own business, driving on a rainy Monday when I noticed a dark blue jku with some sort of soft top combination.  What is it, how well does it hold up to the weather, does it store compactly, and how does it hold up in the rain?  This nosey neighbor is wondering.
Title: Re: 2013 JKU - Black on Blue Build
Post by: FlyingForMe on August 17, 2015, 07:38:28 PM
Haha, it's a tonneau cover (duster deck), safari top and a wind jammer.
Works pretty well unless it rains a lot. Then it leaks into the back pretty bad.
I'll have to take off the duster deck for a couple of sunny days to air it out.

Stores pretty well I can keep the safari top under the duster deck and flip the wind jammer down under the deck as well.

I also got a sweet new accessory my son helped me install.

Chad you should consider a 2 door wraparound for the back window, i have one, just never run it (pointless without the doors)
takes a little modifying to make it work, but not difficult.

i have the 4 door window also if anyone wants it (rear window in his pic above)

Ryan H. came to help troubleshoot my DW that has been an on/off problem for the past year or more. It is narrowed down to only being an issue while hitting bumps over turns and found the upper Drag Link tie rod end to be bad and the Track bar has signs of wear.

Parts ordered to hopefully finally fix my DW for good.

Synergy Drag Link.
Rock Krawler Bomb Proof Adjustable Front Track Bar.
Grade 8 Bolt Kit.

Hopefully this fixes my steering issues and my DW for good!!!

I don't have the time to go play with it any more and don't see that changing any time soon.
